Denis Irwin believes Manchester United’s hopes of a season rest on the back of Paul Pogba.
The France World Cup winning midfielder ended last season with 13 goals, while also topping the standings for most assists with eight.
Former United defender Irwin insists Pogba includes a bold attitude that’s a must for Ole Gunnar’s Solskjaer’s aspect to improve on their sixth place finish last season.
“There’s not too many gamers of Paul’s quality,” Irwin stated. “He’s got lots of players facing him who have got great speed and I believe he has the comprehension of having the ability to choose a wonderful pass.
“We want consistency from him but going forward today and particularly where we’ve started dominating games he is going to become a big, big player for us.
“I believe every team wants a risk taker but I consider him and believe he’s the one that could unlock doors.
“We have created enough chances to win matches so he is going to be vitally important for us.”
United have picked up four points from their opening five matches, which makes them in eighth place going into the worldwide break.
They were forced to settle for a draw away at Southampton on Saturday, leaving them without a win since their opening day thrashing over Chelsea.
Irwin is convinced his side that is former are heading in the perfect direction and says that fans should accept the procedure will take time.
“I understand that we have only picked two points up from three games but it seems like we should have a lot more,” Irwin added.
“We may have to accept a little bit of patience and we may not challenge the top two this year but certainly we need to be up there and much better than annually.
United will be sweating on the fitness of summer registering Aaron Wan Bissaka, that had been made to withdraw from England’s squad on Tuesday with a spine injury.
The 21-year-old has impressed since his #50m movement from Crystal Palace, and Irwin considers fellow summertime improvement Harry Maguire and Wan Bissaka will reinforce a United defence that accelerates 54 goals last year.
“His design sense looks really, really great,” Irwin stated.
“That is a massive surprise for somebody who has been a winger for decades. He’s been a huge plus this season although he has got a lot to understand clearly.
“We will need to begin keeping clean sheets again but I believe we have started making steps in the perfect way in helping in our defensive work, I really do.”
