Denis Irwin believes Manchester United’s hopes of a successful season rest on the back of Paul Pogba.
Even the France World Cup winning midfielder finished last year with 13 goals as leading goalscorer for United, while also topping the standings assists with eight.
Former United defender Irwin insists Pogba has a attitude that’s crucial for Ole Gunnar’s Solskjaer’s aspect to improve on their sixth place finish last year.
“There’s not too many gamers of Paul’s quality,” Irwin said. “He has plenty of players facing him who have great speed and I believe he’s got the understanding of being able to choose a excellent pass.
“We want consistency out of him sometimes but moving forward now and especially where we’ve started dominating games he’s going to be a big, big player for us.
“I think every team wants a risk taker but I consider him and think he’s the one that could unlock doors.
“We have created enough chances to win matches so he’s going to be extremely significant for all of us.”
United have picked up four points from their opening five matches, which makes them in place heading into the international break.
They were forced to settle for a draw off on Saturday, leaving them without a win since their opening day.
Irwin is confident his former side says and will be going in the right direction that fans should accept the procedure will take some time.
“I know that we’ve only picked two points up from three games but it feels like we need to have a lot more,” Irwin added.
“We may need to take a little bit of patience and we might not challenge the initial two this year but surely we will need to be up there and better than last year.
United will be sweating on the fitness of summertime signing Aaron Wan Bissaka, who had been forced to withdraw with a spine injury from England’s group on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old has amazed because his #50m go and Irwin believes Wan Bissaka and fellow summer addition Harry Maguire will bolster a United defence that accelerates last year to 54 goals.
“His positional sense appears really, really great,” Irwin explained.
“That’s a huge surprise for someone that’s been winger for years. He’s been a huge plus this year although he’s got a great deal to understand.
“We need to start keeping clean sheets but I believe we have started making steps in the ideal direction in assisting in our defensive job, I really do.”
